VMDO Architects Celebrates The Opening Of The
University Of Virginia’s John Paul Jones Arena
Charlottesville, Virginia-- November 12, 2006 --- VMDO Architects, lead designers of the University of Virginia’s new John Paul Jones Arena, celebrated the opening of the spectacular 15,000+ seat facility on Sunday, November 12th when the University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams christened their new home.
Conceived as both the home of the University’s men’s and women’s basketball team, as well as host to an array of exceptional entertainment events year-round, the Arena was a design challenge VMDO Architects met with enthusiasm and passion. As the creative team behind a number of the University of Virginia’s academic and athletic facilities, the firm enjoyed a unique and thorough understanding of their needs. Along with their selected collaborative partner, the design firm of Ellerbe Becket, VMDO Architects created not only the largest indoor arena in Virginia, but also one of the most innovative facilities of its type in the country.
“We are delighted at the extremely positive reception the John Paul Jones Arena has received from the University’s administration as well as from the members of our community,” comments VMDO’s Bob Moje, Principal-in-Charge of the project. “We’re really looking forward to the reaction of the players, fans, and visitors.”
Moje didn’t have to wait long. When the Lady Hoos tipped off against Team Concept in a pre-season exhibition game, Head Coach Steve Smith had this to say about the arena. “I'm a former WNBA coach, and I still scout for the WNBA. Right now this is probably the best arena I've seen in college ball. Right now, this one tops the cake. This is a phenomenal facility."
